On My Lap

How often do you see kids in elementary school using a laptop in class? If you asked your parents that question, they would think it was a joke. But nowadays, it's not so uncommon. As the age goes up, so does technology use. In elementary school, laptops are rare. High school: many more. And by university, it's expected. Yes, laptops can be very useful. (You can read the post "It's Electric" for the scoop on iPods and cell phones). The benefits of learning to use computers for school are huge. So why not teach kids at a younger age? What do you think about younger kids using laptops inside of school. Will it be expected in the near future? You decide. But for now, we'll leave them for the more experienced.

Your Special Day

As you may know, today (March 8th, 2011) is the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day. How do these type of days play in with school? There are many special days that we're at school for. But today, at my school, there was not ONE mention of the fact by a teacher or student. Don't you think teachers should educate kids on days like today?
Here's there excuse: We don't want to offend anyone. By saying this, they mean, if you tell kids it's Halloween, but some kids don't celebrate Halloween, they could be "offended". Simple solution: Educate kids about ALL THE DAYS! Muslim holidays, Christian holidays, Buddhist holidays, etc. You're not offending anyone by including everyone. Or are you? Size Matters

What is the ideal size of a walnut? We know the answer to that question: Walnut-sized. But how about this question. What is the ideal size of an elementary school class? No, I don't mean the size of the classroom, I mean the amount of students in that class.
Well, in kindergarten, you may have had a class of about 32 students. There may even have been an additional teacher there to help out some of the time. But in elementary and secondary schools, what is the best size for a class?
Many would argue: small is best. This is because the students get more attention from the teacher, and they will learn more. This theory is correct. From a teacher or parent's point of view. But what about the students? Here are a couple reasons that students may actually want a BIGGER class.
-Less attention from the teacher may be GOOD
-Less chance of the teacher checking for daily homework completion
-More friends to socialize with
Teachers, students, and parents may all have different points of view on class size. What do you think? That's why there's a comment section. Don't be shy. We don't bite. But your teachers might if you're in a class that's too small...

It's Electric

"Put away that iPod!" "No more computer usage!" "Is that a cell phone?!"
Are these phrases you hear daily from your cranky teacher, unappreciative of the power of electronics. Teachers do have a right to confiscate these, but SHOULD they use that right? Can electronics be a positive influence on a student's experience in the classroom?
The short answer: Yes. It's certainly possible.
The catch: It's also very possible for them to be a negative influence.
Here's a great example: If children are allowed iTouches in class, they can use it as a calculator, dictionary, and units converter all in one. A very positive use. However, if they download game apps and pretend to use the vital functions while secretly gaming during class, it's a negative influence.
Here's the answer to our dilemma. The teachers should let kids use electronics in class. If they misuse them in class, then they'll just have more homework that they should have done in class. The teachers can just sit back and relax.
